Wireless Pioneer & ArrayComm Chairman Honored By WCA For Lifetime Leadership

Jan 17, 2006 – SAN JOSE, California

Wireless cellphone inventor Dr. Martin Cooper — who is Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of ArrayComm LLC — will receive the annual Lifetime Achievement award of the Wireless Communications Association International (WCA) in a ceremony here on Jan. 19, it was announced today.

The ceremony will be prior to his 8:45 a.m. presentation at WCA’s International Symposium and Global Expo, which is the broadband wireless industry’s premier event for the winter and spring months. It extends from Jan. 17-20 at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel, with the WCA Investment Forum beginning Jan. 17.

A pioneer in the wireless communications industry, Dr. Cooper conceived of the first portable cellular phone in 1973 and then led the 10-year process of bringing it to market. During 29 years with Motorola, he built and managed both its paging and cellular businesses and served as Corporate Director of Research and Development. Products that he introduced have had cumulative sales volume of more than $80 billion. Upon leaving Motorola, he co-founded Cellular Business Systems, Inc. and led it to dominate the cellular billing industry with a 75 percent market share before selling it to Cincinnati Bell. He has been granted eight patents in the communications field, and has been widely published.

ArrayComm has grown under his leadership since its founding in 1992 from a seed-funded startup in San Jose, CA into the world leader in smart antenna technology, with 400 patents issued or pending worldwide. Among Dr. Cooper’s honors, he received the American Computer Museum’s George R. Stibitz Computer and Communications Pioneer Award in 2002. Also, he was an inaugural member of RCR Magazine’s Wireless Hall of Fame. Red Herring Magazine named him one of the Top 10 Entrepreneurs of 2000, and Wireless Systems Design Magazine provided him with the 2002 Industry Leader award. A member of WCA’s Board of Directors, he holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology.

“During this pivotal year for the wireless broadband industry,” commented WCA President Andrew Kreig, who will make the presentation, “it is particularly important to recognize the leaders who have brought the industry to the exciting juncture today, when opportunities abound in both the U.S. and worldwide.”
